No F*cking Thanks

Non Fungible Tokens, or NFTs are the latest trend to sweep the art world. In an ever increasingly digital world, NFTs offer artists a chance to capitalize on selling consumers the intangible — a mere string of blocks that show ownership over the incorporeal. While some see a new way to sell and collect art, others see a get rich quick scheme that has major ramifications on the environment due to how the currency to acquire NFTs is mined. Laocoön and His Sons shows a family in conflict with a serpent, twisting and constraining them to the point of agony that’s clearly shown on their faces. One can view the serpent as capitalism, coiling itself around its prey — squeezing until all life leaves its body. The artists, struggling to escape its grasp, are reaching out to the ethereal figure that’s circulating them, seemingly like a life vest, only it’s immaterial. Or maybe they are the earth, and the serpent — carbon emissions caused by the mining of Crypto. This work is part of a series of physical posters that will be placed around the city that people can keep if they find them, the opposite of an NFT.
